If a government service provider is telling you that your only option is to vote online because your duty is during daytime hours, that is not correct. In India, your right to vote cannot be restricted to one method. Duty timings cannot be used as a reason to limit your voting choices.
Every citizen has the right to vote freely through the normal process set by the Election Commission. If your duty clashes with polling hours, your department is expected to make arrangements so that you can still vote. This may include adjusting your duty timing, allowing you time to reach the polling station or providing the proper option such as a postal ballot, if you fall under the category allowed to use it. Forcing you to vote only online is not permitted.
You can approach your senior officer or supervisor and inform them that your duty hours are affecting your ability to vote normally. Most departments provide a short time window for employees to cast their vote. Once the matter is brought to their notice, they are responsible for making suitable arrangements.
If the department refuses to help or continues to insist on online voting only, you can take the issue further by submitting a grievance on the government’s public grievance portal. Restricting your voting right is not allowed, and a formal grievance requires the department to respond.
You can also bring the matter to the attention of the district administration or the election officer in your area. They are responsible for ensuring that government staff on duty are able to vote without difficulty.
